comparison of conventional salient-pole synchronous generators and permanent-magnet-assisted salient-pole synchronous generators based on finite element analysis

abstract
this paper presents a novel salient pole synchronous generator i.e. permanentmagnet-assisted salient-pole synchronous generator (pma-sgs). due to saturationof conventional synchronous generators (sgs), permanent-magnet-assisted salientpolesynchronous generators (pma-sgs) are presented. pma-sgs are a new type ofsalient-pole synchronous machines with extra permanent magnets (pms) betweenthe adjacent pole shoes. placing pms between adjacent pole shoes leads to areduction in flux saturation plus an increase in armature flux linkage. in otherwords, the generator can operate at higher capacity. in this paper, a comparativestudy is carried out between conventional sgs and pma-sgs based on finite elementanalysis (fea). this is done via simulation of a pma-sg compared to aconventional sg. simulation results show superiority of pma-sgs over sgs. in fact,in pma-sg maximum flux density in stator core is increased and pole bodies are notsaturated. besides, pma-sg has higher flux linkage compared to conventional sg.therefore, higher voltage could be produced in the generator. in other words, theoutput performance of the pma-sg is considerably better than that of aconventional sg.

This paper examines efficient methods for the calculation of open circuit voltage distortion in salient pole synchronous generators with damper windings. It then proceeds to examine the role of damper bars in the level of distortion. The simplified finite element method employed is inclusive of eddy current effects, dynamic field current and full interaction of all MMF sources. It allows accura...
full textA Simple Pattern Recognition Approach for Monitoring Incipient Stator Faults in Salient-pole Synchronous Generators
This paper studies the effect of incipient stator faults in salient-pole synchronous generators and its detection using a simple pattern recognition methodology. A theoretical linear model for the synchronous generator is first developed to provide the relationships between stator and rotor harmonic currents and possible incipient faults on stator electric circuits. All theoretical findings wer...
full textA Review on Modelling of the Maximum Lagging Current Test Method of Salient Pole Synchronous Machines
Quadrature-axis reactance for various reasons comes into account as one of the most important parameters of salient pole synchronous machine. There are several common standard methods for measuring this parameter that also have been explained with some details in the standards, scientific papers and text books. One of these methods is the maximum lagging current test that is done simply at no-l...
full textDetermination of Load Angle for Salient-pole Synchronous Machine
This paper presents two methods for load angle determination for salient-pole synchronous generator. The first method uses optical encoder to detect the rotor position. In some cases the end of the rotor shaft is not free to be used and mounting of an encoder is impossible. Therefore, the second method proposes estimation of the load angle based on the measured electrical values that have been ...

In the present work, an integrated method of pole shape design optimization for reduction of torque pulsation components in permanent magnet synchronous motors is developed. A progressive design process is presented to find feasible optimal shapes. This method is applied on the pole shape optimization of two prototype permanent magnet synchronous motors, i.e., 4-poles/6-slots and 4-poles-12slots.
